Great post! People tend to think 'I have a way' when dealing with the illiterati so tend to come to me rather than other people in the office with their IT issues. I'm a software engineer rather than an administrator, so it may be I have more in common with them. My advice is play down your own knowledge and don't assume they know *anything* but don't be patronising about it!

I agree, one of the most calming phrases is 'you can't break it' when it comes to tech stuff. Oh, and I'm stealing the Eddie Izzard video clip for my blog - thanks for the laughs! http://runningforfood.com/node/121

excellent advice, I find unless you are dealing with someone under 20 yrs old it takes three tries to get it sunk in. Most people tend to think they are stupid and everyone else is clever, they don't realise that everyone is in the same boat. A kind teacher can put them right, and it sounds like you are doing a great job. Common sense and kindness go a long way. well done.
