@Damien: You’re right, I forgot to outline the rest of the process assuming everyone knew what the next steps were.

I’ll update the post accordingly but here they are:
1. After you’ve created the note, take a screenshot by pressing the top & front buttons at the same time. The screen will “flash” and the image will be saved in your Camera Roll.
2. Go to your Photos app & to Camera Roll, and select the photo you want.
3. Press the button with the arrow on the far left and select “Use as Wallpaper”
4. Go to Settings and set your PIN code so that your phone now requires a PIN code.

When you’ll next wake your phone up from standby, you’ll see the wallpaper telling someone who finds your phone how to get a hold of you, while protecting your personal data by keeping it locked with a PIN.

There’s an app in the App Store that can generate a pretty wallpaper like this, with contact details overlaid on top of your favourite image. I’ve no idea what it’s called, if anyone finds it please reply

The BlackBerry has this built in by default – you can leave a message on your lock screen. Mine usual says “Reward if found” then gives my name & address.

A less scrupulous version I’ve seen simply says
“This handset has been stolen and is being tracked by the police. Please return to…”

You neglect to mention that the first iteration of your handy “Found this phone” wallpaper had your mobile number on it. The mobile… that you’d just lost.
