And a happy new year to you, my friends

December 31st, 2005

You’ve heard it a million times, you’ve heard it from everyone, but allow me to wish you all, dear readers, a prosperous, healthy and productive new year!

Have a good evening, drink in moderation (sort of), don’t drink and drive (most importantly), and enjoy the company of good friends and family.

See you all in the new year!

Thought I’d post a link to my sister Julie’s cool little media project from this past university semester.

It’s a true image of her desktop (probably less messy than it really is) and an interesting little insight into her personality.

I wonder if she’ll blog more if I link to it?

How to spend your days off

December 30th, 2005

Ze hubby and old housemate Hodgson are watching Total Recall this evening. Arnold Shmarnold, it’s a rubbish film! At least, I’ve got chocolates and my laptop to help make up for the sheer crapness of the movie they picked! To quote Hodgson, “Who needs the laws of physics when you’ve got an Arnie film?”

The past two days have been foodie days, with cheese fondue and Chinese fondue yesterday and a serious roast dinner today! A huge roast chicken, a honey & mustard roasted ham, with the whole range of Christmas veggies – yummy roast potatoes, carrots, brussels sprouts and roast parsnips. We’ve got loads of chicken and ham left for sandwiches, mmmm!!!

Hard to believe it’s already Friday night and we’ve been off for a week though. I would love to have another whole week off, but I have no doubt I’d start getting antsy by the end. So I’ll happily enjoy my new years eve get together with some good friends, take Sunday and Monday to chill out (and recover, most likely) and troop on back to work on Tuesday!

Oh god, as if Total Recall wasn’t bad enough, the boys have now moved on to watching the Shopping Channel! I didn’t think it could get any worse…

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Let it snow!

JCB SongMy favourite song of the moment is the JCB Song by Nizlopi. A few Warwickshire boys who recently came out the paintwork and turned out to have produced a good, fun, lighthearted album. Not necessarily the album of the year, but the JCB song is heartwarming, and just soooo adorable.

It’s got that same folk-pop feel (yuck, I feel dirty using the word “pop” because I associate it to pukingly bad dancey rubbish like Pussycat Dolls and Jessica Simpson, but that’s a topic for later) as Jack Johnson, maybe Rusted Root too (slightly less mental and over-enthusiastic though), with a nice thick layer of English countryside to it.

Probably nothing new to the Brits (unless you live under a rock), as we’ve all heard this song all holiday season on a fight against Shane Ward, The Pogues and god knows who else for the Christmas number one. Unfortunately, it didn’t win against Shane, the X Factor winner, but it certainly gave it a run for its money.

Ok, forget anything I’ve said. You can listen to the song, watch the video and doodle on Luke’s notebook right here!!!

Wrapping up…

December 23rd, 2005

Whether you’ve been wrapping up presents for friends and family or wrapping up projects for the end of the year, I wish you all, dear dear readers (whoever you are, I still don’t get why anyone finds my nonsensical ramblings vaguely interesting…), a wonderful Christmas and a very relaxing time!

I’m sure I’ll come up with a few posts over the holidays, but if I don’t, please don’t hold it against me! I’ll be too busy drinking, eating and being merry (and playing Buzz Music Quiz or Singstar, most likely!)

And as final pre-Christmas thought: If you’re ever bored during the holidays, there’s endless fun with Pick Up Sticks!!!*

Pick Up Sticks dog!

Happy Holidays!

Like Top Gear?

December 21st, 2005

Just a little heads up for Top Gear lovers abroad, quite a few videos are available on Google Video now!

How to get around the Nurburgring in a Transit van, the unavoidable Supercars comparisons, the Lotus Exige vs the Apache helicopter, and everything else.

Not that they’re ever serious, but if, like me, you couldn’t care less about the actual cars being reviewed, there’s always the clip of Hammond Hamster getting hypnotised by Paul McKenna and forgetting altogether how a car works or how to drive it! A classic Top Gear moment!

“Go get the snow tires put on before it’s too late!”

December 18th, 2005

This is the nagging sound of any Canadian wife to her husband in early November when the first signs of winter frost start appearing. A car without snow tires is like well… a Canadian without a shovel, it ain’t going nowhere!

While on the phone to my dad, he mentioned that more than 50 OC Transpo buses had little ice mishaps on Friday. Couldn’t help but do a little search for some photos of accordion buses sitting in snowy roadside ditches.

Snowblower

This guy is hoping his snowblower allows him to get most of the snow off his driveway and onto the neighbour’s before said neighbourino steps out and has a go at him.

OC Transpo bus in a snowbank

And this bus… well, this bus is in a snowbank, like some 50 others according to the Ottawa Citizen article below. A thick layer of slush and 24 centimeters of snow in an overnight fall just yell out trouble. I remember walking along the Transitway (the dedicated bus lanes underpassing the highways and car routes) and praying that no bus will cover me in slush driving by or worse, slip and crash into me. The first was a regular occurence, but thankfully the second never happened to me.

(I copied the article here because the Citizen isn’t known for giving much free reading to non-subscribed readers beyond a day or two after publication. It was originally found here.)

Le roi et l’oiseau

December 17th, 2005

I just had a moment of melting childhood softspot when I saw this link to Le roi et l’oiseau on DVD Times on Spyhunter’s blog. It was apparently renamed The King and the Mockingbird in English, but was never subtitled (Good! I hate subtitles – but not half as much as I despise dubbing! Just don’t get me started on that one!)

I’m sure my sisters remember as well as I do watching this movie around Christmas, with the giant robot who sits on the pile of rubble, thinking about his lost friends. While the story is a bit fuzzy in my mind, I clearly remember the slow-moving story and the scarce dialog. In a way, it was a great way to get some quiet time amidst the crazy (and very noisy) French-Canadian family get togethers.

Le roi et l'oiseau

On the note of family get togethers and Christmas parties, I was thinking a few days ago how glad I am that neither my Canadian family or British relatives here have smoking houses. I couldn’t imagine how oppressive a dozen smokers getting together at Christmas would feel, on top of the heavy feeling brought on by too much eating and drinking, by the general noise of having so many people together. Thank Dog for non-smoking houses!
